My name is Matt and I’m a beer guy. For me, there is no pleasure greater than good friends, good food, and good brews. This blog is meant to inform and guide fellow beer lovers to what they might like. I’ll discuss beers according to my tastes, but if the description sounds like something you generally like, then go ahead and try it! One beer may not be for me, but it might be your new favorite. When you click the photo for any given beer review, it will link you directly to the brewery’s website. hit counter

Photo with 10 notes

Mean Old Tom – Maine Beer Co., Portland, ME.

ABV: 6.5%
Style: Stout.
Seasonality: Limited (I believe it was planned to be a one-off, but I know they recently bottled another batch).
Drank: 16.9 oz. bottle, snifter.
Pour: Dark brown (almost black), with a thin, frothy, tan head. Nice lacing.
Aroma: Coffee, roasted malt, with notes of chocolate in the background.
Taste: Coffee, bitter chocolate, and roasted malt. Lingering bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and creamy.
Though it says it’s aged on vanilla, it’s not present anywhere in the taste or aroma. The sweet vanilla would definitely be a nice contrasting component. Tasty, though.
Food pairing: this is definitely a good cheese beer. Something creamy and pungent.
